Temptation
I was still feeling antsy the next morning, brushing my teeth so hard that I made my gums bleed. Iâd pissed off Simon, and now I didnât know if I could trust Nick to tell the truth, never mind stick to his promise to give me the Marcie interview. I had a missed call from him, but he hadnât left a message. When I did talk to him, I wasnât sure what I would say, or what he could possibly do to make me trust him again.
I owed it to Mike to tell him what had happened. So the first thing I did when I got to work was swing by his office. He smiled broadly when he saw me, and my stomach lurched. Iâd bet the magazine on Nickâs honesty; Mike had taken a personal financial hitâmaybe telling him about this mess wasnât the best move.
âMorning, Zoë. I trust youâve got over your catastrophic Sunday.â
I was pulling back a chair and froze. He was talking about Riskâwasnât he?
âIâll get you next time,â I replied, with fake bravado.
He shook his head. âI got a call from Nick Jones earlier.â
Oh. He knew.
I had a moment of irritation at the crappy little bromance they had going on.
We had to talk it out nowâwalking away was no longer an option.
I slumped into the chair opposite Mike. It was a gorgeous old captainâs chair, upholstered in green leather. I had no idea where it had come from; the chairs on my side of the office where all black plastic, and if you were lucky, they had a lever to adjust the height.
I wasnât lucky.
âWhat did Nick have to say?â
âYouâre doing a great job. He says youâre interviewing Jonny tomorrow and Marcie next week.â
What?
Was Nick telling the truth or just playing Mike? I could believe heâd set up a Jonny interview without giving me much warning, but was he really going to follow through with Marcie?
âI have to admit, Mike, this is news to me. I missed a call from him this morning. Iâm just surprised thatâs what he wanted to tell me.â
Mike peered at me. âWell, why else would he be ringing at the crack of dawn? Unless the two of you are having a tumultuous affair youâre not telling me about.â
He chuckled, and I tried to mirror his smile. âI did find a stray sock in my bedroom. I guess it must belong to one of my other lovers.â
I went back to my desk and dialed Nick. I wasnât sure what to expect, but if we started arguing, with the office empty at least I wouldnât have an audience.
âZoë? Thanks for returning my call.â
He sounded cordial enough, but I wasnât about to let my guard down.
âI hear Iâm interviewing Jonny Delaney tomorrow. Did you have a specific time in mind, or do I have to clear my whole day?â
I hadnât meant to sound tetchy, but it was breathtakingly arrogant of him to tell Mike before telling me.
âI tried calling, but you didnât pick up.
